Are Italy and the American DEA out to ban effective heroin detox?

Medical Cannabis exponents all over the world have long suspected that narcotics police are more interested in preserving their monopoly over pain control than allowing patients to choose their own medicine.

Drug reformers in the United States are up on arms because the DEA just scheduled Kratom, apparently because too many people were taking it at home to wean themselves off heroin. I say that because although kratom far less addictive than opioids, and a lot of people found the active ingredient, mitragynine, just as effective as opiates for chronic pain, DEA minions in Italy almost simultaneously issued an order banning both mitragynine and ibogaine. (The U.S. banned ibogiane in 1967, but it (...)

Encod and the Italian Draft of the Parliamentary Intergroup Legal cannabis

A personal note from Enrico Fletzer
Some of our Italian Encod members have asked the Steering Committee to comment on the first parliamentary proposal of more then 300 Members of the Italian Senate and of the Chamber of Deputies where the proposal is numerically at the strongest with about 220 subscribers.

Italy is home of Macchiavelli. Italy has always been an interesting location for the incubation of new and some times scary phenomena like fascism and some new political movements. Politics is also multifaceted and what looks positive today can be easily overturned into something negative. For instance there is a discussion apparently coming out of reformist areas that could be possibly ban the selling of cannabis seeds. Of course everything that comes out of the Parliament should be (...)

ITALIAN DRUG CZAR GIOVANNI SERPELLONI ARRESTED!

I don’t rejoice about people ending up in prison but the police putting Dr. Giovanni Serpelloni, the former head of the Italian Anti-drug Department, DPA, under house arrest, is worth some comment. Not only was he a good friend of the US counterparts that -after the shift from the Republicans to the Obama administration- have tried to recycle themselves in the drug policy field and in the US-Italian scientific research that has been also greatly funded. They want to teach the people a lesson coming from Italy: "Don’t fool around with prohibitionists. We have our eyes on you!"

The war on drugs is a war against the people but it also serves more hidden goals. For instance the waste of public money in a system favouring on one hand the established society and on the other hand the friends of the politicians. Dr. Serpelloni has been basically accused of having being elected irregularly as head of the Drug Dependence Unit and allegedly he tried to sell some software for the registration of the 200.000 registered Italian to the same public drug addicts structure he (...)

UNGASS 2016 at the UN in New York
Published on 21 April 2016  by Richard Rainsford
Many activists, NGOs and protestors refuse to go in the building and instead camp outside the UN in New York, for the 2016 UNGASS conference about the War on Drugs! Not only, because UN is a difficult place to get in at the best of times, but because they see it as futile, as many of the key decisions are already made, like the continued adoption of the prohibitionist stance, which was adopted on day one, without any discussion or voting!. This maintains policies that criminalise (...)
