A television in Moldova (Jurnal TV) announced an outrageus case.

A year ago, Mrs. Olga Vladimir, a 75 years old granny, inhabitant of Teleseuca village, was sentenced to 4 years of prison for growing cannabis for personal treatment.

Olga Vladimir does not consider that she has committed a crime, yet knowing from her parents about the therapeutic effects of the cannabis plant.

She sent a petition to the Acting President of the Republic of Moldova - Mihai Ghimpu. She asked to pardon and allow her "to die at home and not in jail". Mihai Ghimpu said that he would personally examine her file.

That is not a unique case in Moldova. Soon, in Chisinau, activists will hold a protest march in support of Olga Vladimir.

Hemp is a traditional plant in these parts, used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes, textiles and foodstuffs. Recently, at the insistence of the United States of America (through 1961 UN Single Convention), it was banned almost worldwide. However, no one can find a viable justification for prohibition of this plant, as it is well known that alcohol and tobacco are more harmful than cannabis and yet are legal.

Moreover, it is recognized that marijuana does not cause physical dependence and there was never registered any human death from it’s consumption. More developed countries (led by Netherlands) have started to abandon the severe law, radically changing the legal-political perception of the marijuana. Using marijuana for medicinal purposes is legalized in most developed countries in the world.
