Why You Should Vote YES on the California "Control & Tax Cannabis" Initiative

For the first time in US history, there is a state initiative to legalize marijuana possession, use, and production for all adults: the California Control & Tax Cannabis Initiative, which will come to a vote in November. Unfortunately, there are some "marijuana activists" who are aggressively opposing the brilliant initiative. In this article I will address some of the myths being told about this initiative, and why I fully support it.

THE CULTURE OF THE BAN ON CANNABIS
Let me start by explaining that I am using the phrase “the culture of the ban on cannabis” to refer to a cluster of stories about the evils of cannabis, which are assumed to be true, which are not allowed to be tested seriously to check their validity, which are passed on and repeated within the various political systems and structures that we have in the world, and which culminate everywhere in some form of active enforcement of the ban on cannabis.

THE INTERNATIONAL AND EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE OF DRUG REGULATION

The discussion over a yes or no to regulation or legalization of cannabis cultivation is dominated by the international obligations of The Netheriands. Before discussing them in detail we should first consider that most of these obligations are motivated from on the one hand the wish to reduce heavy organized crime and on the other hand the wish to prevent the disproportionate infringement by the freedoms in our country of the interests of other countries.

In a recent study it has been indicated it to be a myth that the cannabis trade is completely or mostly controlled by organized crime.1 It is a fact though that especially in the provinces of Brabant and Zuid-Limburg the involvement of criminal organizations is not to be denied neither that part of the dutch cannabis production is exported.

UK: CANNABIS PROHIBITION CAUSES MORE HARM THAN CANNABIS

The report concludes "Policies that control cannabis, whether draconian or liberal, appear to have little impact on the prevalence of consumption."

The authors suggest there is evidence that "the current system of cannabis regulation is not working, and ... there needs to be a serious rethink if we are to minimise the harms caused by cannabis use," which would back up former ACMD Chairman Professor Sir Michael Rawlins and the recommendations he gave at the request of the Home Secretary back in March 2008.

A PEACE PROPOSAL IN THE WAR ON NATURE
Cannabis Social Clubs are associations of citizens who want to organise the cultivation of a limited amount of cannabis to satisfy their personal needs in a transparent way that is controllable by authorities. They establish the amount that is necessary for their personal consumption in agreement with legal standards that are valid in their country, and organise a closed circuit of consumption, distribution and consumption without any commercial activities having to take place.
